Egytpian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) will begin its partial trial run on Wednesday, 16 October, following directives from President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.
Madbouly made this announcement during a press conference following his visit to the Esna Temple in Luxor governorate on Thursday.
This partial opening will include the museum’s main hall and gradually introduce other sections, leading up to the grand official opening of the fully completed project.
“The museum is set to be Egypt’s gift to the world, as the largest museum globally,” stated Madbouly.
Since November 2022, the GEM has hosted select events and group visits in parts of the complex to assess site readiness and enhance the visitor experience ahead of the operational trial phase.
Located just two kilometers from the Pyramids of Giza, the GEM spans a vast 500,000 square meters and houses the world’s largest archaeological collection.
Upon its official inauguration, the GEM, overlooking the Giza Plateau, will stand as the largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. Among its most significant treasures will be the complete collection of Tutankhamun, displayed together for the first time since the discovery of his tomb in 1922.
