If you’ve only got three days in Egypt, this is how to spend them: two days digging into Cairo’s ancient and medieval layers, then a full day out on the Mediterranean in Alexandria. It’s a route I’ve refined over hundreds of tours و enough ground to feel complete, without the exhaustion of trying to see everything at once.

You’ll have me at your side the whole way as your private Egyptologist guide, plus a dedicated driver and an air-conditioned vehicle for every leg of the trip. No fixed script — if a site grabs you and you want more time there, we take it.

Day One: Into Ancient Egypt — Giza & the Grand Egyptian Museum

Nothing prepares you for standing at the foot of the Great Pyramid for the first time. We’ll spend the morning across the Giza Plateau — Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure — before heading down to the Valley Temple and coming face to face with the Sphinx. There’s room in the schedule for photos, and for a camel ride across the plateau if that’s on your list.

In the afternoon, we move to the Grand Egyptian Museum — the newest and largest archaeological museum on earth, home to the full Tutankhamun collection displayed together for the first time in history. Prefer the older, more intimate downtown museum instead? We can swap in the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir. Either way, there’s time built in for a relaxed lunch and a browse through the shops nearby.

Day Two: Old Cairo, Citadel, Coptic Quarter & Islamic Streets

Where day one is stone and silence, day two is bells, minarets, and centuries of daily life layered on top of each other. We start high up at the Citadel of Salah El-Din, the fortress that guarded medieval Cairo, where the Alabaster Mosque of Mohamed Ali watches over the whole city.

From there we drop down into Coptic Cairo, a walled cluster of churches and history: the Hanging Church suspended above a Roman gate, the ancient Abu Serga Church built over a cave tradition that sheltered the Holy Family, and the Ben Ezra Synagogue. We finish on Al-Moez Street, the old spine of Islamic Cairo, wandering past centuries-old mosques and madrasas into the noise and color of Khan Al-Khalili.

Day Three: A Day by the Sea — Alexandria

Alexandria feels like a different country — Mediterranean light, wide corniche, a history built by Greeks, Romans, and Ottomans rather than pharaohs. We leave Cairo early, before the city wakes up, for the roughly two-and-a-half-hour drive north.

Catacombs of Kom Al Shoqafa, Alexandria Day Tour

First stop is Pompey’s Pillar, towering over what’s left of the ancient Serapeum and the ruins of Alexandria’s “daughter library.” Then we go underground into the Catacombs of Kom Al-Shoqafa, a strange and beautiful mix of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman burial styles carved deep into the rock. By afternoon we’re on the waterfront at the Citadel of Qaitbay, a 15th-century Mamluk fort standing exactly where the Lighthouse of Alexandria — one of the Ancient Wonders — once stood. If you’re up for it, lunch by the sea with fresh Mediterranean seafood is the perfect way to close out the day before we head back to Cairo.
